Adolescents are unique; a strong set of communication skills is required to establish the trust needed in the patient-provider relationship while supporting the adolescent/parent/guardian structure. It is important to understand the influences of rural communities on the development of that relationship including the benefits and challenges. It is important for all healthcare providers to be well versed in the state and national laws/regulations that govern consent and confidentiality when providing healthcare services for adolescents.
