Native American Health

This module provides an overview of the historical and contemporary influences on Native American health with special attention given to the challenges faced by rural populations nationally and in Colorado. Suggested strategies for improving health care and outcomes among this diverse and resilient population are provided.

Natalie Pool PhD, RN

Raised in rural western Colorado, Natalie Pool PhD, RN, is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Northern Colorado. She has a diverse clinical background (including serving several rural and urban Native American communities) and research experience in nursing care of Native American patients with cancer, support of Native American students in the health sciences, the role of implicit bias within clinical decision-making, and other health equity topics.

After completion of this module, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the historical and contemporary influences on Native American population health in rural settings.
  • Identify the most pressing health concerns within the rural Native American community both regionally and nationally.
  • Explore culturally safe clinical practices to enhance the care of Native American individuals, families, and communities.
