This module covers the CDC’s top eight zoonotic diseases, exploring symptoms, modes of transmission, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of each. It also covers some diseases of particular concern in Rural Colorado/ Western Mountain States. It discusses the concept of “One Health,” the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.
Amanda Bristol Swanson, MD, Family Physician, Faculty, University of Colorado Rural Program
Dr. Swanson is a board-certified family physician. She has lived and worked in rural Colorado most of her career. After completing medical school at the University of St. Louis, in St. Louis, MO, she competed residency in Belleville, IL, and then a fellowship in Rural Family Medicine in Tacoma, WA.

- Identify the eight highest priority zoonoses per the CDC.
- Identify zoonoses of particular concern in rural Colorado.

- Develop prevention plans for patients at high risk.
- Develop treatment plans for patients affected.
