This module addresses considerations related to healthcare for LGBTQIA2s+ individuals within a rural setting.
Amanda Bristol Swanson, MD, Family Physician, Faculty, University of Colorado Rural Program
Dr. Swanson is a board-certified family physician. She has lived and worked in rural Colorado most of her career. After completing medical school at the University of St. Louis, in St. Louis, MO, she competed residency in Belleville, IL, and then a fellowship in Rural Family Medicine in Tacoma, WA.
Learning Objectives
After completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and define gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual behavior and the multiple terms within those categories.
- Discuss some of the unique challenges and barriers to care in rural communities for LGBTQIA2S+ patients.
- Identify best practices for inclusive health care for the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
- Identify common masculinizing and feminizing therapies and common side effects.
- Identify patients who would benefit from PrEP and name the three approved PrEP options. After completion of this course, the student will be able to:
