Rural Veterans Health

Overview

Rural areas have a higher percentage of veterans than urban areas.  It is important for healthcare professionals to understand the impact of military service on the health of veterans and the healthcare resources available to veterans.

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the components of the US military services
  2. Define the category “veteran” and how veterans are distributed in rural and urban areas.
  3. Describe how military service can impact health.
  4. Understand how veterans get healthcare and the services to which they are entitled.
  5. Understand the components of a military history.

Evan Kikla, MD, USN

Dr. Evan Kikla is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is currently an orthopedic surgery resident and Medical Officer in the Navy.  Prior to his career in medicine he served as a Marine Infantryman during the Global War on Terror from 2009 to 2014.
